Notes on the Isle of Wight Day Archive Group’s Quiz Trail, September 23rd 2017 by Janet Haire.
Luckily it was a fine day, so it made it all the easier for the participants to walk around the village of Freshwater answering the questions in the Archive Quiz Trail!
Around 43 people took part, and everyone completed one or other of the routes. Many worked in pairs and there were a couple of family groups as well. Most were local residents but one duo was a father and son who came from East Cowes to take part! Starting at the Memorial Hall the questions tested their observational skills. The route continued up Avenue Road, School Green Road, Moa Place, Brookside Road & then Queens Road. The longer route went further along School Green Road, and finished at the ‘End of the Line Café’ in Afton Road. Several questions involved photos of buildings, or parts of buildings, or what was written on various plaques or commemorative stones.
The Wesley Hall was our ‘base’ and on display were a series of photographs of the immediate area. These were greatly appreciated by a continuous stream of people throughout the day and whilst enjoying a cup of tea, many anecdotes and memories were shared.
Thank you to everyone who took part or who helped in any way, particularly a few of our ‘Supporters’. Congratulations to the winners of the Quiz Trails. The short route Quiz Trail was a tie, the winners being Lesley & David Murdy and Ann Steward. Each received a FATAG publication. The long route Quiz Trail was won by the Bray family and the prize was a copy of ‘West Wight Remembered’ by Eric Toogood.
